U of Iowa Seeking Participants for Tinnitus Studies

Researchers at the University of Iowa are launching several new studies to treat tinnitus, or ringing in the ears.

A website has been created to allow people with tinnitus to register their interest in participating in these studies. All interested adults with tinnitus can sign up for the Tinnitus Registry, and those who previously visited the registry and were told they did not qualify for the studies are encouraged to visit the site again.

The Tinnitus Registry can be found at: http://survey.uiowa.edu/wsb.dll/127/tinnitusregistry.htm.

is there any trials in the NYstate regions

  2. Editor Says:

The best source to find current trials or studies on tinnitus is to contact the American Tinnitus Association at http://www.ata.org .

  3. John Macri Says:

May 2, 2011: I am 68 years old and have had periodic, short term bouts of loud whistling tinnitus that would disappear on its own in seconds.

Recently I had a loud hissing & whistling tinnitus that would not go away for almost a month and I thought it would never go away. After reading about how little can be done to cure tinnitus, I spent a considerable amount of time digging in to the internet. In remote websites I found the following suggestions:

    1. One doctor prescribed Nasonex nosespray believing it was caused by a sinus condition. I liked this idea
because I have allergys and also learned that it is a cortisone type spray and that is as powerful a drug I could get close to my ears. I started using Nasonex before bedtime and upon waking.

    2. Someone had tried antihistamines with some success. I bought allegra 24 hr allergy medicine because it is now sold OTC at prescription strength and is non-drowsy. Simultaneously with the above I started taking one pill a day.

    3. One doctor reported that recent studies showed that low dose of Paxil (10 mg prescription reqd)taken at bedtime has shown to provide relief. Paxil is prescribed for anxiety and I have hade a buch of that due to my wife’s recent back surgery.
Simultaneously took one dose before every bedtime.

    4. One OTC supplement showed some progress so I simultaneously started taking two LIPO FLAVINOID pills with breakfast and dinner.

After about one full week of this multiple discipline approach my tinnitus was reduced to just a low hiss present upon waking and almost completely disappearing
    during the day.

AND THEN I FOUND A WEBSITE THAT SHOWED A SIMPLE HAND/HEAD EXERCISE THAT AFETR TWO ORE DAYS HAS PERMANENTLY AND COMPLETELY STOPPED ANY HINT OF TINNITUS. HERE IT IS, AS SIMPLE AND STUPID AS IT SOUNDS:

With your fingers pointed to you back, place your palms tightly over both ears. Both of your middle fingers should just touch. Then using the fingers between your thumbs and middle fingers, place it on top of each middle finger and snap it off to your head. This will produce a loud snap in your ears. The website said to do this snapping 50 times, several times a day.

I WAS AMAZED THAT THE RESULTS WERE ALMOST IMMEDIATE!

HOWEVER, I CANNOT TRULY TELL WHICH OF THESE SIMULTANEOUS EFFORTS DID IT, BUT WHO CARES. THE MEDS I TOOK FOR TWO WEEKS PRODUCING LIMITED BUT SIGNIFICANT RESULTS.

THE SNAPPING I ONLY DID FOR A THREE DAYS.

What about the possible causes of my tinnitus:

    1. Use of a leaf blower without ear proection around the time it started. Still stupidly using with ear protection.

    2. Increased recent use of Alleve to help my old aging bones. Now using tylenol instead.

    3. When constipated one day I pushed so hard, I got extremely dizzy which likely indicated ineer ear or eardrum complication.

    4. I take a full aspirin a day per my MD. I did not stop the aspiring as i did not want to trade tinnitus for a blood clot!

In the final analysis, i don’t have tinnitus any more so try the shotgun approach. What have you got to lose? Show this to your doctor, and

    Good luck.

  4. CT Says:

Oh my gosh!!! I just tried the snapping thing once for 20 repetitions…not 50…I have arthritis and couldn’t do it…but it worked!!!! I have had the ringing that sounds like it’s inside your head for at least a month. It seems to be gone…WOW. Will it last? If not, I know what to do! I’m amazed.

  5. Mike Canna Says:

John Macri, thanks for the tip about snapping the fingers behind the head. I’ve had tinnitus for over three years, which came on suddenly when biting an almond. The tinnitus was accompanied by sudden hearing loss (about 30%) in the same ear. About a month ago I woke up with additional buzzing in that same ear, went to the doctor and my hearing was reduced about 65% on top of the additional “ringing”.

The doctor put me on 60mg of prendnizone for a week with four days of 20mg following – with no change in symptoms.

I just tried your snapping excercise and I can barely hear the buzzing sound.

    Thank You.

  6. Beth Johnson Says:

I just tried the snapping exercise and my buzzing in not as aloud. I was told by my ENT Doctor years ago, maybe 2005 there was no cure for tinnitus after another hearing test. But I want to try the B-12 Formula first and go from there. It would be great to have some relief from all the “racket” in the ears.

    Thank You
